In 2016, Hellenic Bank received a Global Finance Magazine award as the Best Digital Bank in Cyprus, and was upgraded by Fitch to B rating. In 2018, the Bank purchased loans and deposits, including 75 branches, of the Cyprus Cooperative Bank, which made Hellenic Bank the second largest in Cyprus, with a 31% share of the Cypriot deposit market and 20% of the loans market. Current number of employees of the Bank is over 2500.

The Bank was founded in 1976 with assistance of Bank of America, in 1996 it purchased the local operations of Barclays Bank. A major shareholder in the previous years was the Church of Cyprus.
